Piano Proficiency Exam



1. Play all major and harmonic minor scales, two octaves, hands separately using traditional piano fingerings.
mm: quarter note = 60, scales in eighth notes.

2. Sight-read two line piano score with semi-independent hand movement.

3. Perform the accompaniment to a solo piece in area of specialty. (Prepared ahead of time; consult with your applied instructor before choosing.) Please bring your soloist with you to the exam. Keyboard Performance majors may choose to accompany an instrumentalist or vocalist.

4. Two-handed accompaniment to a major scale (up and down the scale) in keys up to and including four sharps and flats.

5. Transpose and harmonize melodies without chord symbols. (48 hours preparation time.)

6. Improvise and/or play by ear (specifics to be determined according to student's area of specialty). Many students choose to improvise over a 12-bar blues progression.

7. Read two lines together at the same time from a full score (specifics to be determined according to student's area of specialty). (48 hours preparation time.)
