Study Partners

Each student is required to choose and work with a study partner from his/her section. If a students fails to choose a partner, one will be assigned to him/her. Partners are expected to meet at least twice a week (non-consecutive days) for the purpose of aural skills and keyboard drill. [Extra credit will be awarded to those who meet more frequently, not longer.] Partners will also be responsible for performing melodies and rhythms together in class and for performing keyboard and harmonic exercises as a team.

Grading Policies

Grades are based on 50% skills (singing, rhythm, dictation, keyboard, improvisation) and 50% written work (analysis, part-writing, composition). Class participation and "extra credit" are used in resolving borderline grades.

Sight singing and rhythm execution will be evaluated in class at random intervals. Likewise, keyboard and harmonic skills (occasionally involving improvisation) will also be tested in class, usually on Fridays. Students who are absent or late for class may be assigned a grade of "F" on singing, rhythm, or keyboard that day. Dictation assignments will be collected at random intervals; grades on dictation assignments are purely diagnostic in nature -- use them to determine whether or not you need extra help in dictation. All written assignments are due at the beginning of the class period for which they are assigned. Late assignments will be accepted within a week of the original due date, and will be assessed a 50% penalty; assignments not turned in within a week of the original due date will be assigned an "F". No exam, test, quiz, dictation, in-class performance, assignment, etc. may be made up without a written excuse.

The final examination will be given on the date and at the time specified on the Academic Records website:
http://www.furman.edu/registrar/final_exams.html

Academic dishonesty will result in a course grade of “F” and initiation of appropriate disciplinary procedures (as described in the University Catalog). In addition to cheating on tests, this includes sharing written assignments and collaborating on dictation assignments. Do your own work!

Attendance

I do not "take attendance". However, if you are not in class when called on (for singing, rhythm, keyboard, written work, etc) you may be assigned a grade of "F" on that particular item. I appreciate being notified in advance of any absence from class, and if your excuse is valid you may not be penalized that day.
