mRNA: carries the codons that determines the sequence of amino acids
Prokaryotes: 5’ end of mRNA contains the Shine-Dalgarno sequence
- Purine rich region just upstream of the initiation codon
- Complementary to a pyrimidine rich sequence at the 3’ of the 16S rRNA (small subunit)
