Immature sperm move into epididymis
- single long, convoluted tube (7 m long)
- Sperm is processed further; stored in epidiymis and vas deferens.
- Older sperm not ejaculated are destroyed & recycled (some eliminated in urine).
Fully matured, motile sperm leave epididymis & vas deferens upon ejaculation.
- Secretions from accessory glands make up 95 % of semen
- Accessory glands
- two seminal vesicles
- two bulbourethral glands
- prostate gland.
- Glandular secretions provide:
- nutrients for sperm (power sperm movement)
- lubricating substances
- alkaline substances that promote their survival by neutralizing the acidic environment of the vagina.
- Prostate gland surrounds urethra near bladder
- prostate enlargement affects significant number of older men
- some develop prostate cancer.
