Genetic Counseling
The following three paragraphs describing a genetic counselor were adopted in 1983 by the Board of Directors of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, Inc.
Genetic counselors are health professionals with advanced education and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. They come from a variety of disciplines including biology, genetics, nursing, psychology, public health, and social work.
Genetic counselors participate in many aspects of health care. Most counselors work as members of a health care team which provides information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for such conditions. They identify families at risk, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks or recurrence, and review options available to the family. Genetic counselors also provide supportive counseling to families, serve as patient advocates, and refer families to other support services. They serve as educators and resource people for other health professionals and the general public. Many engage in research activities in the field of medical genetic and genetic counseling.
Health professionals who have had advanced education and experience in the area of medical genetics may be eligible for certification as genetic counselors by the American Board of Medical Genetics. Additional information about this profession may be obtained by contacting the National Society of Genetic Counselors, Inc.
