Nutrition

A nutritionist may go into college teaching and/or research, become associated with the food industry in basic or applied research, become more involved in dietetics leading to jobs in food service management or clinical nutrition, or go into public health nutrition. As a public health nutritionist one could provide leadership to legislators, administrators, health planners, and health officials on issues affecting the nutritional status of the population, participate in the planning of health services, the establishment of standards and the evaluation of nutritional services. One could become involved as an advocate for nutrition programs for low-income women and children or for the growing population of elderly people. The development and coordination of Food Banks is another possible job opportunity.

Nutritionists may be hired by agencies such as the American Heart Association and the Diabetic Association. Some Nutritionists have opened their own practices acting as consultants in nutrition education programs for corporations that recognize the advantage of having healthy employees. They provide nutrition education through consumer groups and the media. The activities are limited only by the energy and creativity of the nutritionists.
