The
Adventure of the American Mind Program
Announces
2006
Summer Institutes at Furman University

Program
Description
The
digital collections of the Library of Congress tell America's
story. Join us at Furman University this summer to learn how to
tell digital stories utilizing the resources of the American Memory
Collection of the Library of Congress. An intensive week-long
institute will offer you the opportunity to become efficient historical
researchers in the digital archives of the Library of Congress.
Each participant will produce a two to three-minute digital story
utilizing text, images, music, voice-over narrations and video.
Instruction in utilizing the appropriate technologies will be
provided in the state-or-the-art Language Resource Center in the
newly renovated Furman Hall.
When are the Institutes?
Three five-day
sessions of the 2006 Summer Institute will be offered. Participants
may specify their preference for one of the following dates:
-
June 12—June 16
-
June 26— June 30
-
July 24—July 28
Who May Apply?
All in-service
K-12 teachers or media specialists currently employed in a public,
private or charter school in Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens
or Spartanburg counties may apply. Previous participants in the
Adventure of the American Mind program are encouraged to return
for more advanced training. These institutes are most appropriate
for teachers of history, social studies, English, language arts,
or art.
Cost?
Summer Institute
attendance may be used toward recertification. Although final decisions
regarding certificate renewal credit are made by school districts,
Furman will be happy to verify the number of hours of direct participation
in activities. For those wanting to earn recertification credits,
all costs will be covered by a grant from the Library of Congress.
Those who wish to receive graduate credit may pay $275 per credit
hour to the Graduate Program.
Benefits?
All participants
will receive five full days of instruction, printed tutorials, and
at least one of the software packages used in the preparation of
the digital stories. Lunch each day in the Furman Dining Hall is
included at no cost. Participants who must drive long distances
to get to campus may be eligible for a small mileage stipend.
