EXAMEN I:  le 25 mars
  • PARTIE ORALE
    • Dictée. A paragraph based on the Champ de Vocabulaire 
    • Questions. Based on vocabulary and grammatical structures. 
    • Vrai/Faux. Based on texts, authors, anything discussed in class. 
  • PARTIE ECRITE 
    • Négation. Give negative answers to questions. 
    • Passive voice. Put passive voice sentences into active voice with "on" as in exercise A, p. 44. 
    • Traduction. Translate English sentences into French. Review avant de, après + infinitif passé, après que. See exercise B, pp. 30-31. 
    • Questions sur les textes. Answer content questions on each of the following texts using complete sentences: La Cathédrale, Une lettre de Van Gogh, Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau, Calligrammes, Le Portrait. A choice of questions will be       provided. 
    • Synthèse. Write a summary of Le Portrait using the past tenses (passé composé, imparfait,  plus-que-parfait). This is the exercise Synthèse 1, p. 45. 50-60 words. 
    • Be sure to review smaller grammar points such as depuis, venir de, rendre, devoir, en + participe présent, etc. 

 
 
 

EXAMEN II:  le 12 avril

  • PARTIE ORAL
    • Dictée. A paragraph based on the Champ de Vocabulaire 
    • Questions. Based on vocabulary and grammatical structures. 
    • Vrai/Faux. Based on texts, authors, anything discussed in class. 
  • PARTIE ECRITE 
    • Comparisons. Write comparative sentences based on information given. 
    • Verbs. Fill in blanks; sentences use si clauses and conjunctions presented in B.2.b, p. 104. 
    • Translation. Translate English sentences into French. 
    • Interrogative pronouns. Ask questions on the underlined portion of a sentence, as in A, p. 98. 
    • Questions on the readings. Answer content questions on each of the following texts using  complete sentences: Le paysan et le diable, La Belle et la Bête, La première nuit. Also be prepared to answer questions on the films La Belle et la Bête (Cocteau version) and Kirikou et la sorcière. A choice of questions will be provided. 
    • Composition. Imagine the thoughts of La Bête while Belle is away visiting her father. What are his fears? What are his hopes for the future? Use at least two examples of si clauses; most of your  verbs should be in the present conditional to express the possible outcomes envisioned by the Beast. Be sure to remain true to the content of the text. Prepare this part ahead of time, but you will write it without notes during the test. 



 

EXAMEN III:  le 23 avril
Hiroshima, mon amour


  • PARTIE ORALE
    • Choix multiple. Choose the best of the answers you hear. 
    • Vrai/Faux. Based on text, author, biographical or literary background, anything discussed in class. 
  •  PARTIE ECRITE
    • Chronologie. Indicate the chronological order of a list of events from the story in the work.
    • Questions.  Answer content questions. A choice of questions will be provided. 
    • Essais. Write a short essay on each of the following questions. (70-80 words) 
      • Reste-t-elle à Hiroshima? Répondez à cette question en expliquant les raisons pour votre choix. 
      • Le modernisme. Citez trois caractéristiques du modernisme, et montrez un exemple de  chaque caractéristique en discutant un aspect de l'oeuvre de Duras (et de Resnais). 



 
 

EXAMEN IV:  le 8 mai


  • PARTIE ORALE
    • Dictée. A paragraph based on the Champ de Vocabulaire

  • PARTIE ECRITE
    • Les pronoms. Direct, indirect, and tonic pronouns, y and en. See this exercise
    • Le subjonctif. Possible formats include those as in A, pp. 139-140, and B, p. 140. 
    • Les articles. Fill in blanks with correct article, as in Application grammaticale, p. 131. 
    • Questions on the readings. Answer content questions on each of the following texts using complete sentences: Colloque sentimental, Eloge de l'amitié, L'amour au val-fourré, Ma grand-mère toute puissante, Mère Awa. A choice of questions will be provided. 
    • Composition. Write a paragraph as in A l'écrit 2, p. 130. Use the present and past tenses as appropriate. Be sure to remain true to the content of the text. Prepare this part ahead of time, but you will write it without notes during the test. 60-70 words.

    • Matching. Tests material concerning authors and texts from Unité 4. See this exercise
    • Grammaire générale. Fill in blanks using English cues. Tests grammar and vocabulary from the entire book. See this exercise
    • Questions sur les textes. Based on the following readings: Jeanne d'Arc, Sans papiers, and Cinq semaines en ballon. 
    • Essai. You are Jeanne d'Arc. It is the eve of your first meeting with Charles VII. Write him a note in which you tell him who you are and why you are coming to see him. Attempt to persuade him to meet with you upon your arrival. Tell him all the things you think he should or must do to restore the King of France to his rightful throne. Use the present, past and future tenses as appropriate. Use and underline at least two examples of the subjunctive and one example of the present conditional as you exhort him to abandon his card games and act like a king. (100-120 words)
