        Course Description

This course is designed to introduce middle and high school teachers to the integration of technology into foreign language education. It is open to teachers of all foreign languages and will be taught in English.

        Course Objectives

        • Establish a comfort level with the technology
        • Integrate technology into the curriculum
        • Develop the critical skills to use technology effectively

        Textbooks

Students will be required to purchase the following textbooks. Both are available at the Furman University Bookstore.
        • Bush, Michael D., ed. Technology-Enhanced Language Learning

        • This text will be used to explore the pedagogical implications of technology-enhanced language learning.
        • Warschauer, Mark, ed. Virtual Connections

        • This text will be used as a source book of examples of technology-based language learning.

        Course Policies

        Attendance

This class will meet five days per week from 1 pm to 4:15 pm for three weeks. There will be no class meeting on July 3. Given the compressed nature of the course, your attendance at EVERY class session will be indispensable. More than two absences will automatically lower your course grade by one full grade.

        Preparation

Since the pace is rapid, students are expected to be prepared to participate actively in each class session. An electronic syllabus is provided, and students will need to check it daily for updates and changes.

        Evaluation

Evaluation for this course will be done by electronic portfolio, rather than by the traditional examination procedures. At the end of the session, students will present a portfolio of required items, as indicated on the syllabus.

        Grading Scale

The grading scale used for this course will be the one in effect in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages. A=100-90; B=89-80; C=79-70; D=69-60; F=Below 60.
