MFL 195:  Making an Image Map with Map Edit

  1. Install the Map Edit software from the CD
    • Open up Windows Explorer
    • Double click on the D drive (CD-ROM drive)
    • Double-click on Map Edit - it will install very quickly

     
  2. Copy the map file from the CD to the hard drive
    • Go back into Windows Explorer
    • Double-click on the D drive (CD-ROM drive)
    • Double-click on the "Maps" folder
    • Locate the map for your country
    • Click on the map file, hold the left mouse button down and drag the file into your personal folder on the C drive

     
  3. Create an HTML document containing the map image 
    • Open Netscape Composer - you will see a blank page
    • Put a title at the top in the center of the page
    • Hit "Enter" twice (to leave some space between the title and the map)
    • Click on the image icon
    • In the dialogue box that opens up, click on "Choose file"
    • Select the map file for your country (ex: france.gif or spain.gif or mexico.gif)
    • Save your document (name the document map.htm)
    • Minimize Netscape (click on the _ in the upper right-hand corner)

     
  4. Create the image map
    • Open Map Edit (click on "Start" then "Programs" then "Map Edit")
    • Open your map.htm document (within Map Edit, click on "File" then "Open HTML document" and select your map.htm document)
    • A dialogue box will open asking you to select the image you want to make into an image map; since you have only one image on the page, it will show only the file name for your map.gif; highlight the file name and click OK.
    • Next, click on the green rectangle at the top of the Map Edit window
    • Draw a box around the capital city (ex: Paris, Madrid, etc.) - follow the instructions given
    • When you finish your box, another dialogue box will open up asking you what page you want to link to.  Type in the complete URL (ex:  http://www.paris.org) for a web site for the capital city 
    • Click OK to close the box

     
  5. Save your document
    • Click on "File" then "Save HTML document"
    • Minimize Map Edit (click on the _ symbol in the upper right-hand corner)

     
  6. Test your link
    • Restore Netscape
    • Switch to the Navigator (you are currently in Composer; in the lower right hand corner, you will see an icon of a ship's wheel - click on it to get to Navigator)
    • Open your document (Click on "File" then "Open Page" then "Choose File"; select your document, double-click on it, then click on :"Open.")
    • Test your link - click on the capital city and see if you go to the web site for that city

     
  7. Finally, make a link to your map on your homepage
    • Go back into Composer
    • Open your index.htm file (click on "File" then "Open Page" then "Choose File"; select your document, double-click on it, then click on "Open"
    • Somewhere on your page, add the words Map of ***** (insert the name of your country)
    • Highlight "Map of *****" then click on the link icon
    • Type in the filename (map.htm) and click OK
    • Save your document, switch to preview, and test your link
