How To Scan an Image

  1. Turn on the scanner, then boot up the computer. If when you arrive at the scanning station, the computer is on but the scanner is off, shut down the computer, turn on the scanner, then reboot the computer. You cannot turn on the scanner while the computer is running.
  2. In the Windows95 desktop, click on START, PROGRAMS, PAPERPORT. Paperport is the basic scanning software that comes with most HP flatbed scanners.
  3. Lift the lid, place your image face down on the glass top of the scanner. Line it up with the green arrow in the upper right-hand corner. Put lid down.
  4. Click on the SCAN button (second from the left on the icon toolbar). The scanner will produce a preview image with a black box around it.
  5. Select the area you want to scan for your final image by placing your cursor over any one of the sides of the black box until it changes to a double-headed arrow. Click the left mouse button and drag the side to where you want it. Repeat with the other three sides of the square until you have delineated the area you want to scan.
  6. When you are satisfied with the selection area, click on the FINAL button at the bottom of the window. The scanner will rescan your image, but this time only the area in the black box will be scanned.
  7. When the scanner is through working its magic, it will place a thumbnail image of your picture on the desktop. To get to the desktop, you can either click anywhere on the desktop area (which is behind the scanning window) to bring it to the front, or click on the DESKTOP button in the icon row at the top of the screen.
  8. To view your image full size, double-click on it and it will be displayed in a new window as it will actually appear. If you are satisfied, return to the desktop (click on DESKTOP icon).
  9. All that remains now is to save your image. First, click once on the thumbnail of the image to select it. Then, at the top of the screen, click on FILE, EXPORT. Give your file a name, note the image format (.jpg is the default), choose the drive and directory into which you want to save your file, then click on OK.
  10. Magic, n'est-ce pas?
