Butterflies and Moths of Southern Vancouver Island--Jeremy B. Tatum

Hedya nubiferana

This is another example of a moth imitating a bird dropping. Although it is easily visible in the close-up photograph, it could easily be overlooked in the wild. The caterpillar is sometimes called the Green Budworm, although the ones I have reared have all been black. I have found them in curled leaves of an ornamental apple tree and of the shrub Amelanchier alnifolia.
