During the semester each student will be required to show a clear understanding of the work covered in the class.  For every class period students are expected to bring to class a one page explanation of the major points in the assigned reading for the day.  The assignment should include one detailed paragraph about the content of the essay and a second paragraph with the student’s reaction to the essay.  For days when there are two reading assignments, summaries and reactions should be made to both essays.  Any questions or concerns/disagreements about the assignment should also be noted on the daily assignments.  Although students are to bring these in every day the assignments will only be collected a total of ten times during the semester.  These ten assignments will constitute 20% of the final grade.  Please note that daily assignments cannot be made up.  Please do not ask me to accept assignments if you have not been in class.  It is imperative for this class that students have done the reading in order for us to be able to have an intelligent discussion about the text.  I am not going to lecture to you and tell you what was in the assigned reading.  Class time will primarily be spent in discussion of the text.  We are not here to worship the writings of the past but to read and understand and to question.  Students are expected to come to class prepared to have something intelligent to say about the reading.

Plagiarism in this class in any way, shape or form is unacceptable.  See the “Plagiarism and Academic Integrity at Furman University” pamphlet you received should you have any questions about plagiarism or academic dishonesty.  If you have further questions, please talk with me about it.  Neither will cheating on tests or other assignments be tolerated in this course.  Make up tests will not be allowed without extenuating circumstances.  If you think you will need to reschedule an exam, make sure you talk with me about it at least one week in advance.  The final exam cannot be given at a time other than what is listed in the schedule.  I cannot grant permission to give the final at a time other than what is scheduled.  Only the dean can grant that.  Make sure to buy plane tickets home at times that allow for your exams.  Be prepared to attend class regularly.

Students with disabilities who need academic accommodations should contact Dr. Susan Clark, Coordinator of Disability Services (2322), in Plyler Hall.  After a meeting with her, contact me during my office hours.  Don't procrastinate: do this EARLY in the term.
