Order Caprimulgiformes
Family Caprimulgidae (Goatsuckers)
Common Nighthawk |
As the name
implies, these birds look strikingly similar to hawks when in flight. They
are primarily active at night, feeding on nocturnal insects (Petersons),
but can be seen first stirring in the dusk hours. The range of both
Chuck-Will's Widows and Whip-Poor Wills extend into the Greenville area,
but they are much less commonly seen in South Carolina compared to the
Common Nighthawk. |
