Ribosomes

• Prokaryotes:

  • 7 copies of a single DNA sequence that codes for all 3 rRNA
  • Initial transcript is 30S rRNA that is cleaved into 23S, 16S, & 5S

• Eukaryotes:

  • Tandem Repeats separated by spacer DNA
    • Large transcript cleaved to make smaller subunits
    • Humans:
      • 45S transcript found on the ends of chromosomes 13, 14, 21, & 22.
      • 5S not part of this larger transcript. Chromosome 1
