- IF2-GTP binds to 30S subunit & facilitates binding of tRNAfMet
- Activated small subunit binds to Shine-Dalgarno sequence 5’--AGGAGG--3’
- Lies 7 bases upstream from AUG start codon
- Complementary to 3’ end of 16S rRNA
