Redox Polymers as Chromophores
Many electrically conducting polymers and even smaller oligomers built from the same monomers, undergo distinct color changes when oxidized and reduced. By tuning the substitutents on the polymer backbone, we are able to adjust the colors that a particular system displays. We are currently preparing the following chromophores, as well as related compounds. This work is designed to correlate structure with chromatic properties, switching speed, oxygen stability, etc. The synthesis below shows a route to a member of the "PEDOT" family of polymers.
